Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could end his MLS career if LA Galaxy loose out in the play-offs this weekend. The player’s glittering career may have finally winded down as he has failed to really pick-up in the MLS since his switch.
The Premier League legend left 18 months ago after his farewell game in the 6-1 embarrassment against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium in May 2015. MLS fans have waited for the player to prove his worth but it seems it will never happen until he exits the league.
The 36-year old veteran managed to play 15 times in his first season. He played 23 games at the StubHub Center this term. However, he could only score a paltry five goals in two years. LA Galaxy would not want to renew his current contract, and a return to Liverpool as a player is not even a dream. Maybe he would get a role as an assistant manager or backroom staff somewhere but his stats as a player in the last two years are terrible.
If the opposition Colorado impress, and turn their first-leg loss, they would progress to the semi-finals and Gerrard’s football career might just end. Gerrard might not get to play during the game – to show how much the star had slumped – and it would be a poor way to bow out for one of the best English players in the last two decades. Though, he never won a Premier League medal, his contributions to the Reds were outstanding and deserving of his legendary status.
Frank Lampard also had a slow start in the MLS but he has gone on to prove himself to the New York City fans. He has had an amazing 2016, scoring 12 goals in 19 games so far despite a poor run last year. Other English stars that moved to the MLS like David Beckham, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Robbie Keane have done well to impress the fans. Gerrard admitted that he was surprised at the level of physical demands of the MLS, and the fans have been surprised at his showing considering his status in England.
